A Day to Remember

danna gomez May 26, 2022

Various opportunities to honor members of the military who died while serving the nation are taking place across West Michigan for Memorial Day. Thankfully, several annual parades and ceremonies are returning from virtual events after a two-year hiatus because of the COVID-19 pandemic. To see the activities around us, click here.

You don’t have to go somewhere to celebrate this solemn day. Here are some smaller scale ideas of how to bring the meaning of the day into your weekend.

  • Decorate - Stay home and deck out your living space with red, white, and blue decorations.

  • Have a moment of silence - It’s simple, yet powerful. Traditionally, the National Moment of Remembrance takes place on Memorial Day at 3 p.m. local time.

  • Visit a cemetery - bring flowers to place on a soldier’s grave and pray for their descendants,

  • Check out the National Memorial Day concert - The concert airs at 8 p.m. Eastern on PBS, on Sunday, May 29, 2022.

  • Call a loved one

  • Go to church

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

danna gomez May 26, 2022

For every 1 case of #ElderAbuse reported, 44 cases are not.

Every year on June 15th, communities around the world join to commemorate World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD). Since its inception 16 years ago, WEAAD has provided an opportunity to promote awareness of—and critical actions from all over the world that addresses—abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older people.

Purple Wednesdays

One way we can all spread awareness of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), June 15th, is by wearing purple! Join in on NCEA’s Purple Wednesday campaign to share why you wear purple for WEAAD and encourage others to wear purple too.
